How about a
‘MOVIECATION’!
Lights camera ACTION!!
The music begins; the girl runs through a field/beach/sunflower farm; the boy
comes from the opposite end; running with the same speed; they meet; a gaze a little too longer than
what normal people have; and then a hug; the camera goes into rotating mode and
finally the song starts and yeah !they fall in love; ever eternal!!
This was Indian cinema; at least
until a few years back. But now, gone are those days where love was the only
theme in our movies. Recently I saw these two very different movies; NeeNa and
Piku that gives a totally different portrayal of women. If NeeNa was the
typical modern biker girl addicted to drugs and alcohols; Piku was in many ways
her opposite, the typical Indian girl who believes in taking good care of
parents at their old age no matter how much they bother you. Yet, certain
similar traits could be identified in both, certain qualities that are not quite
uncommon in at least a few women of today.
For instance both of them were unique
in the sense of their individuality; both were and wanted to be independent, bold
and demanded freedom in their thought. They were not bothered by the society or
what it thinks of their lives. This is exactly what several ladies out there wish
for in their life yet unable to achieve. In real life it is difficult to find a NeeNa or a Piku
since both are like what Shahid Kapoor describes Kareena in Jab we met;
ORIGINAL PIECES! In real life it is hard to have a sense of thought like NeeNa
and Piku, what with the society peeping into your life every now and then! So,
when I say I want to travel alone like NeeNa or I too don’t wish to get married
early my mom says it happens only in movies!! Frustrated I said I am going to
name my child Piku :P!
Mr Bachan in Piku describes marriage
as a low IQ culture, for after marriage the lady becomes so dependent on the
husband, she drops her job, cooking and serving becomes her only thought! In
fact he goes on to say that he is not going to let his daughter marry at all
for the fear of her losing her independent life. Now that is quite contrary to
what fathers of old time movies did!!
Coming to the intention behind me
writing on this topic. For the past few weeks
I find almost all the watsapp and facebook statuses same and it goes like this ‘premam#nivin#butterfly
is mentally mental#malare ninne kanathirunnal#luv”..(Not that I don’t like the
actor in fact at this point he is one my favourite actor J )True it’s a great movie for the
youth. Just wanted to let you know that movies like NeeNa and Piku are also
quite worth the watch.
Well, ’m glad at least in movies some
things are beginning to change. There is no more of love at first sight
happening. Movies are not focussed on the couples getting acceptance from their
families, and most importantly ladies are no longer stereotyped! They are now
not shown running around in a sari that is at the constant verge of falling
down, thanks to the wind that comes out of nowhere even when the sun is so
freaking hot and definitely they are not shown to be falling in love with the
guy as soon as he stands shirtless, amidst a sea with his arms wide open, inviting
her to a hug! Whoo! Now that’s a great relief!
Kudos to the ‘changing’ world of
Indian cinema!
